Ways to stay dry while washing your horse

The weather is improving in the Pacific Northwest so it’s warm enough to start giving my horse a bath.  Whenever I wash my horse, I end up becoming a wet mess, either from accidentally spraying myself with the hose, my horse shaking himself to get dry, or trying to reach over my horse or on his neck and ending up leaning on him for support.

It takes me about 45 minutes to get from home to the barn. So, if I drive home wet, it’s a long, sticky, uncomfortable drive.  Here are some ideas on how to stay dry:

1) Don’t wash your horse, go home, and have a margarita instead!

2) Pay someone else to do it!  Sometimes I wish this was an option.

3) Invent a horse wash-this may take some time…

4) Wear a waterproof rubber apron. It sounds like a good idea but I wonder if it would really keep me dry.

5) Use funky horse washing tools like the Weaver Leather EZ Wash Wand or the Weaver Leather eZall Complete Starter Bath Kit.

I don’t know anyone who has tried either of those!

6) The winning solution: Bring a change of clothes to the barn!!!

The barn I board at has a nice bathroom which makes it easy to change. If you only have a porta potty, you could get a changing tent like Giga Tent. I think it would be really useful at horse shows too. What is your secret to staying dry while washing your horse?
